Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 12, 2008 -- Doheny Global Group, a US based development company, announced at a recent trade mission their intention to develop 100 megawatts of hydroelectricity facilities throughout Georgia.
The trade mission was attended by U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce John Sullivan, Robert Mosbacher Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), Larry Walthers, Director of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), and executives from several leading U.S. companies including Bechtel, Citigroup, Motorola, GE Medical and Doheny Global Group.
The Trade Mission culminated with a Press Conference announcing that Doheny Global Group (http://www.dohenygroup.com), a U.S.-based development company, plans to invest as much as $175 million to develop up to six hydropower stations in Georgia.
Doheny Global Group Managing Director Irwin Katsof and Georgian Energy Minister Alexander Khetaguri announced the plan for the project that would generate about 100 megawatts of electricity.
"This agreement is another good example of commercial ties between Georgia and the United States,'' U.S. Deputy Commerce Secretary John Sullivan told reporters in the capital Tbilisi. "We remain confident of Georgia's economic development.''
Georgian Minister of Energy Alexander Khetaguri added that "The Ministry of Energy considers hydropower to be of the highest economic priority for the country and therefore is pleased to support the efforts of Doheny Group and looks forward to a successful development of the hydropower projects.
Katsof noted that "Energy independence is an issue of critical importance to both Georgia and the United States. This agreement is truly a remarkable undertaking that melds the interests of the governments of the United States, Georgia and private enterprise. We are pleased that we can participate in supporting that relationship."
Georgia has won pledges of $4.55 billion in international aid over the next three years to rebuild its economy and resettle refugees in the wake of a five-day war with Russia in August. A two-year $1 billion offer by the U.S. topped the donations made at a conference co-chaired by the European Commission and World Bank in Brussels on Oct. 22.
